Compartimos, por primera vez en español, una carta abierta de artistas, intelectuales y escritores judíos publicada originalmente en la revista n+1.
Somos escritores judíos, artistas y activistas, quienes repudiamos la narrativa generalizada de que cualquier crítica a Israel es implícitamente antisemita. Israel y sus defensores han utilizado esta táctica retórica por largo tiempo para blindar a Israel de cualquier responsabilidad, dignificar la inversión multimillonaria de Estados Unidos en el aparato militar israelí, oscurecer la realidad mortal de la ocupación, y para negar la soberanía palestina. Ahora, este amordazamiento insidioso de la libertad de expresión se usa para justificar el bombardeo militar en curso de Israel sobre Gaza y para silenciar la crítica de la comunidad internacional.
Condenamos los ataques recientes a civiles israelíes y palestinos y lamentamos la terrible pérdida de vidas humanas. En nuestro dolor, estamos horrorizados de ver que la lucha en contra del antisemitismo se instrumentalice como pretexto para crímenes de guerra, con una clara intención genocida.
El antisemitismo es una parte en extremo dolorosa del pasado y el presente de nuestra comunidad. Nuestras familias han escapado guerras, acoso, pogromos y campos de concentración. Hemos estudiado las largas historias de persecución y violencia en contra de judíos y nos tomamos muy en serio el antisemitismo que actualmente compromete la seguridad de los judíos alrededor del mundo. Octubre de este año marcó el quinto aniversario del peor ataque antisemita cometido alguna vez en Estados Unidos: los once fieles en la sinagoga Tree of Life —o L’Simcha en Pittsburgh—, quienes fueron asesinados por un hombre armado que propugnó teorías de conspiración que culpaban a los judíos por la llegada de migrantes centroamericanos y, al hacerlo, deshumanizó a ambos grupos. Rechazamos el antisemitismo en todas sus formas, incluyendo su enmascaramiento como una crítica del sionismo o de las políticas de Israel. También reconocemos que, como el periodista Peter Beinart escribió en 2019: “El antisionismo no es inherentemente antisemita —y afirmar que lo es utiliza el sufrimiento judío para borrar la experiencia palestina”.
Encontramos esta estrategia retórica contraria a los valores judíos que nos enseñan a reparar el mundo, cuestionar la autoridad y abogar por el oprimido sobre el opresor. Es precisamente debido a la dolorosa historia del antisemitismo y a las lecciones de los textos judíos que defendemos la dignidad y soberanía del pueblo palestino. Rechazamos la falsa dicotomía entre escoger la seguridad judía o la libertad palestina; entre la identidad judía y el fin de la opresión palestina. De hecho, creemos que los derechos de los judíos y los palestinos van de la mano. La seguridad de un pueblo depende de la seguridad del otro. Ciertamente no somos los primeros en decirlo y admiramos a quienes han dado forma a esta línea de pensamiento a partir de tanta violencia.
Entendemos cómo han llegado a confundirse el antisemitismo con la crítica a Israel o al sionismo. Por años, decenas de países han apoyado la definición de antisemitismo de la Alianza Internacional para el Recuerdo del Holocausto. De sus once ejemplos de antisemitismo la mayoría se refieren a comentarios sobre el Estado de Israel, con un tono abierto a una interpretación que limita las posibilidades de una crítica razonable. Adicionalmente, la Liga Antidifamación clasifica el antisionismo como antisemitismo, a pesar del recelo de muchos de sus propios expertos. Estas definiciones han cimentado la profundización de las relaciones entre el gobierno de Israel con fuerzas de extrema derecha e incluso antisemitas, desde Hungría y Polonia hasta Estados Unidos y más allá, poniendo en peligro a los judíos en la diáspora. Para contrarrestar estas definiciones radicales, un grupo de académicos dedicados al estudio del antisemitismo publicó la Declaración de Jerusalén en 2022, ofreciendo guías más específicas para identificar el antisemitismo y así distinguirlo de la crítica y debate sobre Israel y el sionismo.
Las acusaciones de antisemitismo que aparecen como respuesta a la más sutil objeción a las políticas de Israel han permitido a ese gobierno mantener un régimen que grupos de derechos humanos, académicos, analistas legales y organizaciones palestinas e israelíes han llamado apartheid. Estas acusaciones siguen causando un efecto paralizador en nuestra política. Esto ha supuesto supresión política en Gaza y Cisjordania, donde el gobierno israelí confunde la existencia misma del pueblo palestino con el odio hacia los judíos. En la propaganda dirigida de manera interna a sus propios ciudadanos y de forma externa hacia Occidente, el gobierno israelí afirma que el agravio palestino no tiene que ver con la tierra, la movilidad, los derechos o la libertad, sino con el antisemitismo. En las últimas semanas, líderes israelíes continuan instrumentalizando la historia del trauma judío para deshumanizar a los palestinos. Mientras tanto, ciudadanos israelíes son arrestados o suspendidos de sus trabajos por publicaciones en redes sociales donde defienden a Gaza. Asimismo, los periodistas israelíes temen a las consecuencias de criticar a su propio gobierno.
Caracterizar todas las críticas a Israel como antisemitas también distorsiona las imágenes de Israel y el pueblo judío en la imaginación popular. En las últimas dos semanas, hemos visto tanto a demócratas como republicanos defender la identidad judía sobre la base del apoyo a Israel. Una carta abierta, de tono vago, firmada por decenas de figuras públicas el 23 de Octubre, repite la postura del presidente Biden de sí mismo como un defensor del pueblo judío, basado en su apoyo a Israel. Cuando la organización 92NY pospuso un evento con el autor Viet Thanh Nguyen, quien firmó de forma reciente una carta llamando al fin de los ataques israelíes a Gaza, su declaración comenzó destacando su identidad como “una institución judía”. Como otras personas han observado, las herramientas para historizar los ataques del 7 de octubre se consideran un repudio al sufrimiento judío en lugar de ser necesarias para comprender y poner fin a dicha violencia.
La idea de que toda crítica a Israel es antisemita produce una visión de los palestinos, árabes y musulmanes como sospechosos de forma implícita; agentes del antisemitismo hasta que se diga lo contrario de forma explícita. Desde octubre 7, los periodistas palestinos han enfrentado una represión sin precedentes. Un ciudadano palestino de Israel fue despedido de su trabajo en un hospital israelí por una publicación en Facebook de 2022 en la que citaba el primer pilar del islam. Varios líderes europeos han prohibido las protestas propalestinas y han criminalizado la exposición de la bandera de Palestina. De forma reciente, un hospital en Londres desinstaló obras de arte realizadas por niños de Gaza, después de que un grupo pro-Israel afirmara que estas hacían sentir a los pacientes judíos “vulnerables, acosados y victimizados”. De alguna forma, incluso el arte de los niños palestinos iba acompañado de una alucinación de violencia.
Líderes en Estados Unidos han abrazado la oportunidad de confundir aún más la seguridad judía con el financiamiento militar incuestionable e inquebrantable para Israel, y la nula intención de hacer la paz. El 13 de octubre, el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos circuló un memorando interno instando a sus funcionarios a no utilizar el lenguaje de “desescalada/cese al fuego”, “acabar con la violencia/derramamiento de sangre”, o “restablecer la calma”. El 25 de octubre, Biden puso en duda el número de muertes palestinas y lo llamó “el precio” de la guerra de Israel. Esta lógica tan cruel continuará por fomentar tanto el antisemitismo como la islamofobia. El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional está preparándose para una alza pronosticada de crímenes de odio tanto contra judíos como musulmanes—que ya ha empezado.
Para cada uno de nosotros, la identidad judía no es un arma que esgrimir en una lucha por el poder estatista, sino una fuente de sabiduría generacional que dice: justicia, justicia, perseguirás. Tzedek, tzedek, tirdof. Nos oponemos a la explotación de nuestro dolor y al silenciamiento de nuestros aliados.
Pedimos un alto el fuego en Gaza, una solución para el retorno seguro de los rehenes en Gaza y de los presos palestinos en Israel, y el fin de la actual ocupación israelí. También pedimos a los gobiernos y a la sociedad civil de Estados Unidos y de todo Occidente que se levanten contra la represión del apoyo a Palestina.
Y nos negamos a permitir que se supriman en nuestro nombre reivindicaciones tan urgentes y necesarias. Cuando decimos nunca más, lo decimos en serio.
